Chiefs Activate RB Jerick McKinnon in Surprising Super Bowl Injury Update
By Joe Summers
It had looked all week like versatile RB Jerick McKinnon would not be able to play in the Super Bowl against the 49ers, but he took a big step in the right direction Saturday afternoon.
The Chiefs officially activated McKinnon to the active roster, paving the way for him to hit the field for the first time since mid-December.
NFL Network's Ian Rapoport noted that it's unclear at this point whether McKinnon will actually suit up, though it's a promising development nonetheless.
Chiefs Injury News: RB Jerick McKinnon Activated From IR
McKinnon joins WR Skyy Moore as players who were activated, though McKinnon typically has a more prominent role in the offense.
In limited action this season, McKinnon had five TDs after scoring 10 last year. He's an excellent pass-catcher out of the backfield and serves as a perfect compliment to Isiah Pacheco's thunderous power.
The veteran back had four carries for 34 yards and one catch for 15 yards in last year's Super Bowl win over the Eagles, but it's likely he'd have a smaller role on Sunday given he's been out for nearly two months.
We'll keep you updated on further developments when the final injury report comes out, yet it's hard not to get excited about the possibility of a 'Jet' McKinnon return.
