Chargers Try to Salvage WR Room With Weak Free Agent Signing
By Joe Summers
The Chargers are widely expected to take a big step forward under new head coach Jim Harbaugh, with some pundits already proclaiming they'll take down the Chiefs in the AFC West.
That's ludicrous, of course, especially considering how poor the wide receiver room is. Keenan Allen and Mike Williams are gone but never fear, Chargers fans, because DJ Chark Jr. is here to save the day!
Los Angeles signed the former second-round pick to a one-year deal worth up to $5 million on Thursday night. He'll likely play a semi-large role for the Chargers, showcasing just how grim their receiving situation is currently.
Chargers Sign WR DJ Chark in Free Agency
Chark caught only 35 of 66 targets for the Panthers last year, finishing the season with 525 yards and five TDs. The Chargers now have Chark, rookies Ladd McConkey and Brendan Rice, Joshua Palmer, and Quentin Johnston at wide receiver.
Perhaps this is the pot calling the kettle black given the Chiefs' own issues at the position, but that's a downright laughable group to put around Justin Herbert. Los Angeles is one of the few teams that Kansas City definitively has better wide receivers than, and the Chargers don't have the greatest tight end of all-time catching passes either.
Harbaugh is rebuilding the Chargers in his image and the team should be more competitive, but I have the utmost faith in the Chiefs to once again win the division and march through a deep playoff run.
Perhaps Los Angeles will be worthy rivals within a few seasons. As it stands though, I don't expect the team to be much better than last year's group that won just five games.
