Chargers Draft Risky WR Option, Fail to Give Justin Herbert True Weapon
By Joe Summers
The Chargers have officially taken a wide receiver, though he's one that shouldn't strike fear into the hearts of Chiefs fans. Georgia WR Ladd McConkey heads to Los Angeles after the Chargers traded up with the Patriots, but he projects long-term as more of a secondary option than a true No. 1 threat.
McConkey, who was considered an option for the Chiefs at pick No. 32, reportedly fell out of the first round following concerns about a back injury. He's a quality player but not someone who can single-handedly elevate an offense, which the Chargers need after losing both Keenan Allen and Mike Williams in the offseason.
After Kansas City took speedster Xavier Worthy in the first round, it looks like the Chiefs once again stay a step ahead of the competition.
Chargers Make Questionable Draft Choice in Georgia WR Ladd McConkey
The former Bulldog struggled to stay healthy throughout his college career. He ended with 119 catches for 1,687 yards and 14 TDs over three years but never clipsed 770 receiving yards in a single season.
McConkey would've made sense for the Chiefs as a tertiery option behind Travis Kelce and Rashee Rice, yet he'll now be expected to serve as a de facto No. 1 receiver in Los Angeles.
At best, this is a risky pick. At worst, it's a total waste, especially given the Chargers had to trade up to acquire McConkey's services.
Jim Harbaugh is certainly building the franchise in his imagine. Whether or not that's a good idea remains to be seen.
