The two-time defending Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs have an intriguing position battle playing out at training camp, which hasn’t been settled yet with one preseason game left on the schedule.

The Chiefs entered training camp last month without a starter at the CB2 spot, opposite rising star Trent McDuffie on the boundary. Jaylen Watson, Joshua Williams, and Nazeeh Johnson were all listed as potential options to start in the secondary.

However, none of these cornerbacks have done enough to win the job through the first two preseason contests, which could force head coach Andy Reid’s hand. Reid gave an update on the competition on Monday afternoon.

Chiefs News: Kansas City Could Take Committee Approach at CB2

According to Nate Taylor of The Athletic, Reid told reporters that Watson will play in the team’s preseason finale against the Chicago Bears on Thursday if he’s available. Reid added that the team might consider a committee at the CB2 spot in the regular season.

Watson has reportedly missed Kansas City’s first two preseason games with a shoulder injury, so this week’s contest is important if he wants to win the job. However, if you are a Chiefs fan, you are slightly concerned to hear that no one hasn’t stepped up.

Early in training camp, Chiefs defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo commented on the CB2 position and said, “I think it's wide open.”

With Watson sidelined by injury, Williams and Johnson should’ve been able to make up ground or become the frontrunner in the CB2 race.

In last week’s game against the Detroit Lions, Williams played 21 total snaps (13 on defense), while Johnson played 35 snaps (28 on defense). Johnson missed practice on Monday with a hamstring injury, which doesn’t help his case to win the starting job.

Luckily, the Chiefs have McDuffie controlling one side of the field and a good front seven that should help them out this season. However, Kansas City must figure out what to do at CB2 as a committee approach won’t work during the regular season.
