6 Chiefs Who Could Be Cut Prior to Training Camp
By Randy Gurzi
5. Truman Jones, EDGE
As much as Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce get praised for leading the Chiefs to success (and they deserve all the credit they get), the defense is what led them to their latest title.
Kansas City was second in the NFL in points surrendered and second in yardage after giving up 4,926 yards and 294 points in 2023. They also had 57 total sacks, which meant they were averaging 3.4 sacks per game.
That pressure is what kept opposing teams off balance and it wasn't by accident. Chris Jones led the way with 10.5 sacks and was tied with George Karlaftis. The 30th overall pick from 2022 took off in his second season and gave them a difference-maker on the edge. This year, they're hoping 2023 first-round pick Felix Anudike-Uzomah also makes a leap. If not, they can still lean on Charles Omenihu, who had a career-high seven sacks last season.
Their continued diligence in adding pass rushers has paid off as they enter 2024 with a deep stable. That's good for their chances at winning it all again but not good for players such as Truman Jones, who is on the roster bubble.
Standing 6-foot-4 and 250 pounds, Jones went undrafted out of Harvard in 2023. He didn't see the field as a rookie and has a long way to go if he wants to make the roster this year. Right now, that doesn't feel likely which is why he's someone who could be on the way out.
