3 Last-Minute Signings the Chiefs Can Make at Start of Training Camp

As the Kansas City Chiefs go through training camp, they should look at bringing in these 3 free agents at the last minute.

1. Justin Simmons, Safety

It makes no sense to see Justin Simmons without a team this late in the offseason. He's 30 years old but was still playing at a high level for the Denver Broncos in 2023. He picked up 70 tackles and three picks while forcing two fumbles. That came on the heels of a 2022 campaign where he led the league with six picks despite playing just 12 games.

Kansas City might not have a pressing need at safety with Bryan Cook playing well alongside Justin Reid. Having said that, Reid has been criticized for his pass coverage over the past two seasons so adding someone who can help patrol the back end of the secondary is never a bad thing.

Adding Simmons would also solve their depth concerns at safety. As they enter camp, the Chiefs don't have anyone behind Reid and Cooks with starting experience. Rookie Jaden Hicks is likely their top option — ahead of Trey Dean and Deon Bush. He was a fourth-round pick from Washington State so while he has upside, leaning on a mid-round pick might not be ideal.

The only concern with this signing would be whether or not Simmons believed he could get enough time on the field. The Chiefs would have to get creative and be willing to move Reid and Simmons around the field — whether that be in the slot or a sub-linebacker role. That brings up another issue with Trent McDuffie, who is a premier slot corner.

Having said that, too much talent is the exact problem a team looking to make NFL history should be after.
