3 Chiefs Draft Busts Who Could Be Cut This Offseason
By Joe Summers
3. Nic Jones - CB
I'd be surprised to see Nic Jones cut, though the former seventh-round pick could wind up a practice squad casualty thanks to the influx of depth the Chiefs have in the secondary. Sixth-round rookie Kamal Hadden looks like a perfect fit for Steve Spagnuolo's scheme, and there's always the chance an undrafted rookie like Miles Battle leapfrogs Jones on the depth chart.
Jones played in nine games last season, nothing four tackles while surrendering two completions. The Ball State standout played in only 67 defensive snaps but was in for 48% of the snaps on special teams, so he's clearly a favorite of Dave Toub's.
I'd guess Jones' ability on special teams keeps him on the roster, but he'll be fighting this summer to prove he belongs.
Gone is L'Jarius Sneed, but Trent McDuffie, Jaylen Watson, Joshua Williams, Chamarri Conner and Nazeeh Johnson figure to be ahead of Jones. With Hadden and undrafted rookies now in the mix, Jones will certainly be tested this summer.
Given the Chiefs' ability to find late-round corners and turn them into productive players, I believe Jones will get another year with the team. At worst, I'd bet he's a practice squad player.
Even still, the cornerback room is one I'll be watching closely for the rest of OTAs and training camp.
