3 Aging Chiefs Veterans Who Should Be Replaced in the NFL Draft
By Joe Summers
3. Travis Kelce - TE
I'm as sad about this possibility as the next Chiefs fan, but Travis Kelce isn't getting any younger. At 34 years old, turning 35 in October, the future Hall of Fame tight end's playing days are limited and he's already preparing for a multi-faceted post-NFL career.
Tight ends notoriously take time to adjust to the NFL. You don't typically find success drafting a rookie and immediately plugging them into a system, especially one as complicated as the Chiefs' offense. Kansas City has routinely been one step ahead of the competition throughout this dynastic run, so preparing for Kelce's eventual departure now makes a ton of sense.
Kelce still has good football left in him and the Chiefs did sign pass-catching tight end Irv Smith Jr. in the offseason. Even still, we know how much this offense depends on Kelce's brilliance and there's no player who could immediately fill his shoes.
Thus, I'd love to see Veach identify an athletic, talented prospect who Kelce could show the ropes and help mold into a legitimate weapon. Finding a long-term replacement for the greatest tight end to ever live is an impossible task but it's important that the Chiefs start trying soon.
Fingers crossed that Kelce still has a few years left in the NFL, though I'd bet that's unlikely. Kansas City needs to prepare for the inevitable and that means drafting a tight end this weekend.
