One of the consistent issues facing the Kansas City Chiefs during the 2025 season was a lack of consistent production from the defensive interior. This included star lineman Chris Jones, who had two game-losing mistakes and watched his sack production slide in the wrong direction through the first ten games of the season. With this in mind, it was clear that the Chiefs were at a crossroads with the star defender entering the 2026 offseason.

The Chiefs either needed to make the painful decision to turn the page or bring in capable contributors who could bring out the best in Jones. This is the path the franchise has chosen, selecting Clemson defensive tackle Peter Woods 29th overall and setting up what should be a bounce-back season for Jones.

It is important to note that the defender finished last season with 7.0 sacks, speaking to the lofty standards expected of the star. Bringing in Woods is going to turn back the clock to the 2022 and 2023 seasons when Jones was a menace on the inside, piling up double-digit sacks and demanding constant attention, which opened up opportunities for other playmakers.

The difference between the 2023 Kansas City roster and last season was a defensive line that offered Jones far more consistent and productive help. The 2025 campaign was a revolving door of frustration alongside Jones, and adding Woods changes all of this, clearly pushing the star back to the level of play fans are accustomed to seeing.

Chiefs Give Chris Jones a Vote of Confidence with Selection of Peter Woods

Woods is a fantastic run defender and brings a level of physicality that will play perfectly alongside Jones. The selection isn't a threat to the defender's future in Kansas City, but a clear endorsement with the franchise bringing in a piece that best fits alongside the defensive star.

For Jones, it must be a relief to see Kansas City pay a bit more attention to the position instead of simply putting it all on his shoulders. This was a big part of why his stats have dipped over the past two seasons, as Kansas City hasn't done an adequate job giving Jones enough help on the inside, allowing opposing offenses to focus far more attention on limiting the interior rusher's impact.

This need was not only addressed in the draft but also in free agency, as Khyiris Tonga was brought in to bolster the defensive line. Seeing the franchise not only sign Tonga but also use a valued first-round selection on Woods is a message to Jones that he is no longer expected to shoulder an unfair load. This will undoubtedly put Jones in a far better position, one that appears to make a bounce-back season an inevitability heading into the 2026 campaign.
