The Kansas City Chiefs neared camp with one remaining concern, and that was the future of guard Trey Smith. After the departure of Joe Thuney, the importance of having Smith in camp and getting ready for the season was paramount. However, it was easy to see Smith's desire for a new contract based on his performance and where he ranks in the league at his position.

With this in mind, KC fans will be stoked that a deal has finally been struck with Smith agreeing to a four-year extension that is worth $94 million. A well-deserved raise for one of the most important pieces of the Chiefs' 2025 offense.

If the Chiefs are going to a 4th straight Super Bowl, the team is going to need to find more stability and consistency from the offensive line. No one better understands this than Patrick Mahomes, who was tormented in the season's final game in 2024. Mahomes wasn't given a chance to make plays, and the Chiefs are doing their best to make sure this isn't the case yet again. Mahomes wasted little time reacting to the signing, posting a single emoji that was telling of the quarterback's reaction.

Patrick Mahomes Has Fitting Reaction to Chiefs Extension

Pure joy seems the perfect response to having Smith locked up for the future. The guard deserved the raise and is vital for the Chiefs to protect Mahomes on the interior. It should be pointed out yet again that this is the work of the Kansas City front office and another example of just how stable the organization is as a whole.

Mahomes had every reason to pitch a fit after last year's Super Bowl and demand the franchise make changes. As the best player in the league, no one has more power to throw around than the Kansas City star. However, at least outwardly, this isn't how Mahomes does business, sitting back and trusting his coaches and front office to get the job done. It didn't take long for this trust to be rewarded with Smith being retained for the foreseeable future.

Not only this, but the Chiefs have brought back every impact receiver and back while adding to the position. If the protection can hold up, there is reason to believe this Chiefs offense can take a meaningful step forward. Perhaps returning to the high-flying attack Mahomes put together in his first seasons in the league. No question, retaining Smith is a step closer in this direction.
