Patrick Mahomes Has Completely Dominated Key Eagles Coach for Years
The Kansas City Chiefs are set to take on the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday, February 9, in Super Bowl 59. This will mark the second time in three seasons these two teams have met in the big game. That said, Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes has had one Eagles coach's number throughout his career.
According to Jeff Kerr of CBS Sports, Mahomes is 8-0 against Eagles defensive coordinator Vic Fangio in seven seasons. While this by no means guarantees a Super Bowl victory, it provides a bit more of an edge over the opponent.
Patrick Mahomes Has Never Lost to a Vic Fangio-Led Team or Defense
Mahomes' domination of Fangio began during his tenure as the Denver Broncos head coach from 2019 to 2021. During those three seasons, Kansas City and Mahomes outscored Fangio's Broncos 168-74. Moreover, Mahomes threw for 1,400 yards, seven touchdowns, and two interceptions with a 65% (119/181) completion percentage against Fangio's defense.
Fangio clearly wasn't able to figure out an effective way to slow Mahomes while in Denver, and that's been a continued theme throughout their other two meetings. In 2022, Fangio was a defensive consultant for Philadelphia, who had one of the best defenses in the NFL when the two met in the Super Bowl.
In Super Bowl 57, Mahomes led the Chiefs to a 38-35 victory, throwing for 182 yards, three touchdowns, and a completion percentage of 77% (21/27). While Fangio's defense was able to minimize Mahomes' passing yards, he failed to keep the Chiefs off the scoreboard, which is the most important factor.
The last time these two met was in the wild-card round of last year's playoffs when Fangio was the Miami Dolphins defensive coordinator. In that game, Mahomes completed 56% (23/41) of his passes for 241 yards and one touchdown.
Although it looks like Fangio's defense held Mahomes and the Chiefs at bay this game, the Chiefs still won 26-7. Nevertheless, Mahomes didn't have his best day through the air, but that was mostly due to the frigid temperatures.
Much like the first time these two teams met in the Super Bowl, the Eagles have one of the best defenses in the NFL under Fangio. Yet, that has proven not to matter in previous games against Mahomes. Everyone in Kansas City is hoping that Fangio won't finally slow down Mahomes in the Super Bowl.
