Patrick Mahomes Makes Big Reveal About Key Travis Kelce Play in Chiefs Win
By Joe Summers
The Chiefs pulled off another magic trick to come back and beat the Chargers 19-17 on Sunday Night Football to clinch their ninth straight AFC West title. Naturally, Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce turned back the clock on the game-winning drive with multiple key plays.
Following the contest, Mahomes spoke to reporters and made a surprise reveal about a key third-down play to seal the victory. Facing pressure, Mahomes found Kelce for a nine-yard completion that let the Chiefs drain the rest of the clock before the final field goal.
As it turns out, Kelce did not run the route he was supposed to, instead finding space before letting Mahomes do the rest.
Patrick Mahomes Reveals He Made Up Game-Winning Play to Travis Kelce
Andy Reid said that Mahomes told him he'd "make something up" and later, Mahomes noted that Kelce was supposed to run a corner route. Instead, he sat over the middle of the field and waited for Mahomes to notice him.
Kelce's improvisation and chemistry with Mahomes allows him to change the play he's supposed to run when the moment demands it.
Overall, Kelce finished with five catches for 45 yards while Mahomes threw for 210 yards and a TD. He did not turn the ball over, helping Kansas City maintain control of the ball late.
One of the biggest takeaways was the great performance by the defense as well. The Chargers are a quality team and will be in the playoffs, yet the defense held them scoreless in the first half. Los Angeles eventually made a comeback, though the game was well within reach before Kelce and Mahomes took matters into their own hands.
Thanks to the Bills' loss to the Rams, the Chiefs hold a two-game lead in the AFC with four games to go. They'll take on the Browns next week before a Christmas Day tilt with the Steelers. Should they win both of those, the No. 1 seed could be wrapped up within the next couple of weeks.
