When considering what is going to be looked back on as the defining decision of the Kansas City Chiefs' 2026 offseason, there is no reasonable debate as to what single change stands out above the rest. Whether KC's season ends in Super Bowl glory or surprise frustration, the decision that is going to be pointed back to is Andy Reid embracing the need for multiple offensive coaching changes. This wasn't just Eric Bieniemy returning as the offensive coordinator, but DeMarco Murray being brought in as running backs coach and Chad O'Shea taking over the receiver room.

It is worth noting here as well that Nate Pagan was added as the offensive quality control coach. What Reid did was bring in someone who is known for demanding accountability in Bieniemy, as well as embracing youth and new perspectives on the offensive staff.

And it was sorely needed as the Chiefs averaged their lowest points per game in the Mahomes era in 2025. Offensive creativity has been lacking, and Reid's system was feeling predictable and stale, words that would've never been considered as accurate descriptions of the legendary coach in years past. No question, the defining decision of the 2026 season will be coaching changes that either will spark the dynasty back to life or make it clear that a change at the top is necessary.

Chiefs coaching overhaul could be defining offseason decision

The overwhelming expectation, it seems, within the building is that the current coaching staff is able to turn back the clock and form the Chiefs into the best version of themselves. Overall discipline has been lacking on offense for far too long, and these three big additions, with veteran coaches who have been there and done that, will enhance every aspect of what Mahomes and company want to do, which is score a lot of points.

Fans will either credit the decision as the needed kick to get the best out of the current roster or look at it as a warning that bigger changes are needed to return to winning at an elite level. Either way, it is Reid's decisions that are set to define the season ahead and should serve as a bit of a reset after a lost 2025 season.

No question, expectations should be high that Bieniemy is going to help Reid push the offense back into more creative territory while the new energy of young position coaches helps provide a unique perspective and push the Chiefs back into the conversation as the premier contenders in the AFC.
