Massive Eagles Injury News Throws Wrench in Chiefs' Super Bowl Plans
The Kansas City Chiefs and Philadelphia Eagles square off in Super Bowl LIX in a little over ten days. That said, preparation for the big game began this week for both sides. While both teams are yet to hold a practice, early estimated injury reports are being released.
Although Kansas City has a few big names (i.e., Patrick Mahomes) on their first estimated injury reports, it's nothing to worry about as everyone should be ready for the Super Bowl. The same might be true for Philadelphia, who just opened the practice window for one of their star veteran pass rushers.
According to Zach Berman of PHLY, the Eagles have opened up the practice window for Brandon Graham. Even though Philadelphia's defensive line has faired just fine without Graham, his potential return could make things even worse for the Chiefs.
Eagles Star Brandon Graham Could Return for the Super Bowl
Graham has been on injured reserve since suffering a torn triceps during the Eagles' Week 12 victory over the Los Angeles Rams. In his absence, the Eagles have used a three-man edge room to replace Graham. The standout in that group has been second-year edge rusher Nolan Smith.
In eight games, Smith has recorded seven sacks, including four in the playoffs. Furthermore, Smith has 34 tackles, eight tackles for loss, and eight quarterback hits. His production, coupled with how good the rest of the Eagles' defensive line is, becomes a scary proposition for Kansas City's offensive line.
Inserting Graham back into the mix could make it even more difficult for the Chiefs and Mahomes to three-peat. Nevertheless, Mahomes and Andy Reid will most definitely have a plan to neutralize the Eagles pass rush with or without Graham.
It feels like a long shot for Graham to get back on the field, though now the Chiefs have to at least consider the possibility.
