The Kansas City Chiefs running game left plenty to be desired earlier in the season. All signs pointed to the team needing to make a move before the November 4 trade deadline. But after a couple of strong games, that may not be the case.
Despite all the rumors of their interest in De'Von Achane, Breece Hall, or even Alvin Kamara, it now seems like the Chiefs won't be adding another running back to the mix. If anything, they could look to part ways with one of theirs.
The Giants Should Trade For Elijah Mitchell
The New York Giants just lost rookie star Cam Skattebo. The first-year bruiser sustained a gruesome ankle injury that will keep him on the shelf for the remainder of the season. As a result, they should pick up the phone and inquire about Elijah Mitchell.
Mitchell hasn't made a single appearance for the Chiefs, and, barring a shocking turn of events or a string of injuries, that's not going to change. He hasn't played since he was with the San Francisco 49ers a couple of years ago.
Even so, he's an experienced back who has made 27 appearances (12 starts) and has turned 327 carries into 1,523 rushing yards (4.7 yards per carry) and nine touchdowns. Those are solid numbers for a serviceable depth piece to add behind Tyron Tracy Jr.
More than that, he should be quite easy to get, with the Chiefs likely not asking for much more than a seventh-round pick or potentially another depth piece; someone they might actually use at some point in the season.
As things stand now, Isiah Pacheco is still the starter. He's looked much more explosive and physical over the past couple of games after a shockingly slow start to the season, and the Chiefs will be wise to keep him around until the end of the season.
Rookie seventh-round pick Brashard Smith is coming off playing his most snaps and logging his most yards from scrimmage (81) in the win over the Las Vegas Raiders, and his pass-catching skills will make him a valuable asset going forward.
Last but not least, the Chiefs have Kareem Hunt to take care of business in short-yardage situations, and while he's not as efficient as he once was, this team's three-headed monster can certainly get by without Elijah Mitchell, so they might as well get something in return for his services.
