The Kansas City Chiefs have looked much more like their usual selves in recent weeks. However, even the best things can be improved, and this roster isn't the exception to that rule. The trade deadline is zooming in, and Dianna Russini of The Athletic revealed the Chiefs' mindset:

"The Chiefs are shopping for defensive linemen — but not running backs," Russini wrote last week.

That was even before they lost rookie DT Omarr Norman-Lott to a season-ending injury, so one can only assume that they will be even more interested in making a move now. That's why they could roll the dice on Mazi Smith.

The Chiefs Could Target Cowboys DT Mazi Smith

The Dallas Cowboys took Smith in the first round of the 2023 NFL draft, but they haven't gotten much from him. He hasn't seen the field in any of the Cowboys' games this season, which suggests that they might be ready to move on from him. Still, his trade value will likely only decrease in the offseason, as teams would be able to target proven free agents instead.

A former star at the University of Michigan, Smith entered the league as the No. 26 overall selection. He was known for his prowess against the run, but he also showcased some potential as a pass-rusher, and he had all the physical tools to be worth the risk.

So far, however, he has yet to break out. Of course, he's played for three different defensive coordinators in as many years, so there's still a chance that he will turn out to be at least a serviceable depth piece.

The Chiefs have the perfect mentor to bring the best out of him in Chris Jones, and if someone can make the most of a promising young player, that's definitely Steve Spagnuolo. In addition, it's not like they would have to give up much to land the 24-year-old.

It's also worth noting that Kansas City actually hosted him for a pre-draft visit, and there were also rumors about its desire to trade up from No. 32 to get him. The Chiefs wound up selecting DE Felix Anudike-Uzomah instead after Smith was off the board.

The Cowboys don't seem to have much -- if any -- use for their former first-round selection. And while he wouldn't be a starter over Derrick Nnadi and will most likely also be behind Jerry Tillery on the pecking order, he's still a young player with impressive physical tools, and the Chiefs can afford to roll the dice on him.
