The Kansas City Chiefs have the best quarterback in pro football, and Patrick Mahomes is back to doing Patrick Mahomes things after suffering the first— and hopefully only— major injury of his career.
That's why, with third-string rookie Garrett Nussmeier looking solid in training camp and the preseason, and Justin Fields essentially being a premium backup, the Chiefs might have the perfect opportunity staring right in front of them.
The Baltimore Ravens just lost Lamar Jackson, potentially for the season, and backup Tyler Huntley will also miss extensive time with a turf toe injury. The Ravens are 4-4, and they might be willing to try to save their season with Fields.
The Chiefs should see what they could get in a potential Justin Fields trade
The Chiefs should be just fine in the quarterback department. Even if Mahomes misses time, which hopefully won't be the case, Nussmeier can get it done. Also, with all due respect, in reality, if Mahomes misses time, the Chiefs' season will probably be over, even if they play Fields.
Maybe the Ravens will be desperate enough to give up a fourth-or fifth-round pick to get their hands on the former Ohio State star. He has clear limitations as a passer, but he's a dynamic athlete who can bring some dual-threat skills to the table.
The AFC North is still up for grabs, with all four teams sitting at .500 or better. The Pittsburgh Steelers don't look like a legitimate threat; the Cleveland Browns might deflate soon; and the Cincinnati Bengals' seemingly improved defense has been as bad as always, so the Ravens might have enough reasons to try to save the season.
Fields has shown some promise in the past. He's probably better suited to be a backup from now on, but we've seen how having a high-end QB2 can be the difference between a wasted season and making the playoffs.
Also, with Jackson's complicated contract situation, trading for Fields would give the Ravens an opportunity to evaluate him and see whether he can still be saved and serve as a placeholder starter if Jackson decides to force his way out of Baltimore. He has a massive cap hit next season, and with no extension on the horizon, he has all the leverage in this situation.
The Chiefs should be active at the trade deadline, and they can use whatever they can get in return for Fields to give Mahomes more weapons and stay alive in the divisional race.
