The Kansas City Chiefs are just days away from their preseason opener against the Arizona Cardinals as they continue preparations on the practice field.
Head coach Andy Reid and his staff continue to evaluate the players participating in training camp so the organization can have the best possible 53-man roster for the regular season. These decisions cannot be made on a whim. Coaches need to differentiate between a player who is simply on a hot streak for a given week and a player who will be a contributor over the entire regular season slate of games.
This is why fans and coaches need to temper their expectations at this stage of the preseason. In the end, performances on the field over the long haul are what will determine who makes the final roster and who is let go.

Chiefs Early Camp Standout Jason Brownlee Is Likely Fool’s Gold
One of the players who has opened eyes at the start of training camp is veteran wide receiver Jason Brownlee. Sunday may have been his best showing in a preseason practice to this point, as noted by Nick Jacobs of KSHB 41 News.
Having joined the Chiefs on a reserve/futures contract in February, Brownlee was "excellent" in practice on Sunday. There is no denying that fact. The question of whether this was a blip on the radar or a sign of bigger things to come needs to be answered, though.
There are only so many spots available on Kansas City's roster for wide receivers to break into the fold and shake up the projected depth chart. So far, Tyquan Thornton has been a player whose name has consistently been in the headlines. Brownlee is getting similar treatment. Even undrafted free agent Jimmy Holiday has been impressing among the receivers in camp with the Chiefs.
Brownlee is doing all the right things at the moment. There is no questioning that. Whether he can keep this up for another 3 weeks, however, is a different conversation altogether. If he wants to make Kansas City's final roster, that is what he will have to accomplish to earn his spot.
Until then, these performances are encouraging to see, but, in the end, they could still be nothing more than fool's gold.
