The Kansas City Chiefs have improved to 4-3 on the season, after Rashee Rice made his presence felt in his return by scoring twice against the Raiders. Following that win, they're turned the page to their upcoming Monday Night Football contest versus the Washington Commanders.
While the preparation has begun there, the info around rookie left tackle Josh Simmons hasn't changed. "As far as Josh (Simmons) goes, I don't have any updates for you. (Brett) Veach is handling all of that," Reid stated, via Charles Goldman of A to Z Sports.
Simmons has been dealing with a personal matter that's being described a family situation. It has forced him to miss Week 6 against the Detroit Lions and Week 7 versus the Las Vegas Raiders. Based on Reid's latest comments, there's still no timetable for his return.
Josh Simmons' Status Hasn’t Changed for Chiefs
While the details regarding this matter remain quiet, we all wish the best for Simmons and whatever he's dealing with. At this time, privacy and space are the only things that can be given to the rookie.
Prior to stepping away, Simmons was finding his groove along the offensive line. According to Pro Football Focus, he had a 65 overall grade and 73 pass-blocking grade. The Ohio State product had only allowed one sack.
Jaylon Moore was asked to step in and he's been answering the bell. While he's not as stout a pass blocker, he's a better run blocker than the rookie. Per PFF, Moore has a 71.4 overall grade. His run-blocking grade is 80.9 compared to a 55 run-blocking grade for Simmons.
Moore has started for the last two weeks and it seems like that will be the case again versus the Commanders. This past offseason, the Chiefs handed Moore a two-year, $30 million deal. When the time of the deal, it was expected he would be their starting left tackle but when Simmons fell into their lap of the first round, it changed everything.
Thankfully for the Chiefs sake, Moore was waiting in the wings and has been able to step in without a hitch. Kansas City hopes he can continue playing at this level, which is a big job. Protecting Patrick Mahomes is one of the most important jobs and Moore has answered the call with ease thus far.
As the week goes, fans will keep an eye out to see if Simmons' situation changes but if not, Moore will be the starter for the third straight week.
