Johnny Manziel reveals how close Andy Reid and the Chiefs came to drafting him

Chiefs fans cannot help but imagine what could've been if Manziel became a Chief in 2014.

The Kansas City Chiefs have the league's best quarterback in Patrick Mahomes and zero reason to consider any past draft regrets. However, fans couldn't help but pay attention to an eye-catching comment from former Heisman winner and former Cleveland Browns quarterback Johnny Manziel. It seems that the star college quarterback was shockingly close to becoming a Chief, with the comment coming courtesy of Sleeper Chiefs KC.

"“Going into the draft we felt like our floor was 23—I think Andy Reid really liked me and that’s where I would’ve gone had the Browns not traded up one spot ahead.”"

If there was anyone who could've saved the career of Manziel and allowed the quarterback to be the best version of himself, it's Andy Reid. With that said, this is in no way meant to push a sense of regret, as the only quarterbacks being compared to Mahomes have already had their résumés written and are long retired. Still, it is fun to imagine what might have been and the star that Manziel would've become within the high-octane offensive system Reid has put on display over his years with the Chiefs.

The important qualifier here is pointing out that Manziel was his own worst enemy and was unable to make the needed life changes to make his career work. The quarterback has been extremely vocal about this, and it's hard to say that joining the Chiefs would've prevented how things played out.

Manziel could've been electric within Reid's system, giving the head coach one of the most unique talents of his career. And perhaps the leadership in Kansas City could've helped Manziel personally, helping the quarterback put together a far different career. One that would've prevented the Chiefs from drafting Mahomes and having the dynastic run they have put together since the quarterback joined the franchise.

Two things can be true: fans can be relieved that this didn't happen and thankful for the presence of Mahomes, while wondering what might have been with Manziel. It is easy to imagine Jamaal Charles and Manziel putting together the league's most dynamic run game and demanding the respect of their peers.

Regardless of how this might have played out, there is no question that fans are thankful it is Mahomes the Chiefs landed in the 2017 draft, as things could not have worked out any better. Sometimes this takes a bit of luck, and Cleveland opting to trade up and take Manziel was undeniably a piece of Kansas City's story and what allowed Mahomes to begin putting together the greatest early career resume the league has seen.
