Despite losing Omarr Norman-Lott for the season when they were already short-handed at defensive tackle, the Kansas City Chiefs have yet to make a roster move to address the situation. Playing on Monday night gives them an additional day to figure out the rotation, but it's safe to assume that there won't be any newcomers between now and then who could realistically play against the Commanders. Of course, one of the practice squad options, like Marlon Tuipulotu (who already played twice this season when the team needed DT depth), Zacch Pickens, and Brodrick Martin, could be elevated. Still, it will mostly be up to the current interior defensive linemen on the roster who will need to step up.
Jerry Tillery and Derrick Nnadi are next in line to absorb Norman-Lott's snaps. With their performance so far, however, how confident the Chiefs can be in replacing the rookie's production is another question. In fact, both Steve Spagnuolo's and Chris Jones' comments on Friday could suggest that it could be the last chance for both veterans to turn their season around.
Chiefs' Defensive Line Is on Notice Ahead of Trade Deadline
While Spagnuolo said that Tillery and Nnadi will play more, he also mentioned that the rest of the interior defensive line lacks the juice Norman-Lott had inside, per A to Z Sports' Charles Goldman. Star defender Chris Jones also remarked on the importance of Norman-Lott and how much they are going to miss him. Jones said that the rookie defender was "finally putting it together, and was taking double teams," before adding that "he did a lot for our team," via Goldman on X.
The mention of double teams is certainly noteworthy. Norman-Lott has been getting better in recent weeks, improving his run defense and making his presence known with his physicality and athleticism. With Nnadi ranking as the worst interior defender in the league, per Pro Football Focus, and Tillery only being slightly better at 101st among 125 qualified players, it's hard to imagine any offenses doubling teaming them. That means fewer one-on-one opportunities for Chris Jones and the defensive ends, making it difficult for the entire DL to generate pressure.
The next two games will present a tough test for the Chiefs' defensive line. The Commanders and the Bills are two of the most dynamic rushing attacks in the league, both ranking in the top five in yards per carry and rushing yards per game. Tillery and Nnadi have to show a lot more than they have so far this season. Otherwise, the possibility of a DT trade before the November 4 deadline will increase significantly.
