The Kansas City Chiefs welcomed Rashee Rice back to the building following his six-game suspension on Tuesday. While the Chiefs were excited to add a player that could take their offense to another level after a 3-3 start, it also meant they had to make room for him on the roster.
Jason Brownlee was the player who got the short straw as the team informed him of his release on Tuesday morning. Although the move could have been seen in advance as Brownlee had yet to make a catch this season, Brownlee took to his account on the social media platform X and sent a final message to his former team saying, “My story gone end legendary.”
Jason Brownlee Has the Right Mindset After Release From Chiefs
Brownlee has been in the NFL for three seasons as an undrafted free agent out of Southern Mississippi, but he hasn’t been able to find a permanent home. He originally made the New York Jets in his rookie season, but caught just five passes for 56 yards and a touchdown. He was unable to make the team and spent the entire 2024 season on the practice squad.
The 26-year-old arrived in Kansas City when he was signed to the practice squad last January and agreed to come back on a reserve/future contract. He made the team out of training camp in part due to Rice’s suspension, but he managed one target in five games before Tuesday’s release.
A player without an official reception since 2023, it didn’t make sense for the Chiefs to keep Brownlee around. He also may have felt the walls closing in with Rice’s return looming as Kansas City had Marquise “Hollywood” Brown, Xavier Worthy, and JuJu Smith-Schuster as established pieces and found a diamond in the rough in Tyquan Thornton, who joined the Chiefs’ practice squad last November.
With Rice returning, Brownlee was expendable. But it appears he’s keeping the right attitude as he searches for his next team.
