Harrison Butker stayed perfect from field goals in the Kansas City Chiefs' Saturday night 16-15 preseason loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Not only did this loss mark the Chiefs' eighth consecutive preseason loss, being without a win since the 2023 preseason, there are still positives to be taken away, one of which is the Chiefs' 30-year-old kicker having another excellent outing.

In last week's 20-12 loss to the Los Angeles Rams, Butker went 4-for-4 from range with a long of 59 yards. He looked poised and confident, with no wasted step in his windup. More importantly, his process was without a knee drop to the ground that has plagued him over the last couple of years. And tonight was much of the same.

Butker went 3-for-4, the most impressive of the trio of makes being a 69-yard boot with room to spare. While he missed a 43-yard attempt late in the fourth quarter, that was of little consequence, as it's still preseason and these games have no bearing on the actual standings.

What’s important going into the 2026 regular season is that Harrison Butker seems to have not only returned to form, but perhaps even elevated himself. With so many years under his belt at this point in his career, Butker has certainly had lots of learning points along the way. And a strong and consistent Harrison Butker is a kicker to be feared by opposing teams.

Kansas City's long-tenured kicker may finally be returning to form

Butker came to the Chiefs in 2017 by way of the Carolina Panthers practice squad and has since then made countless huge kicks in the playoffs, helping the Chiefs to win three Super Bowls in five appearances. He has earned himself multiple big-money extensions over the years and, for a period of time, was considered the best in the NFL at his position.

However, the past couple of years have been rough, as has been the case with multiple aspects of this Chiefs team. Butker missed four extra points last season and has hit below 87% made field goal three of the past four years. The playoffs, however, have been a different story and a better one. Butker holds a career 90% from field goals in the playoffs and an excellent 95.7% from extra-point range.

Which is why the Chiefs have stuck with him through the highs and lows. So far this preseason, it looks like Harrison Butker is primed for a return to the upper echelon of kicking talent.
