The Kansas City Chiefs have been the class of the NFL for several years now and, with Patrick Mahomes locked in for the long haul, it is hard to think that will change anytime soon.
One of the byproducts of Kansas City's run of dominance through the AFC is that some executives from the other 15 teams in the conference have lost their jobs largely due to their inability to figure out a way to knock Mahomes and the Chiefs off their pedestal.
One former GM who was recently relieved of his duties has turned to a media career and is now doubting just how much longer Kansas City's championship window will be open. Former Tennessee Titans GM Ran Carthon, the architect of the roster that was bad enough to secure the No. 1 overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft, recently joined CBS Sports to answer one burning question for every AFC team and his take on the Chiefs was enough to raise a couple of eyebrows.
"I think this window for the Chiefs is closing," Carthon said, via Chiefs on SI. "You have some key components on this team; Chris Jones is getting older and still nursing the knee injury, you have Travis Kelce entering the final year of his deal, and he is making more money off the field than he is on the field.
"I think that window is closing. Now again, you look at them reimagining their offense, and you still have Rashee Rice, you have Xavier Worthy, you sign Hollywood Brown. You have these explosive weapons, but I do think the window for the Chiefs is closing."
Carthon can think whatever he wants as far as Kansas City fans are concerned. If we're being honest, this is the same guy who drafted uber bust Will Levis, then publicly defended that pick throughout all of the boneheaded plays the quarterback made week in and week out.
The fact of the matter is this. The Chiefs have a 14-3 record in the postseason with Mahomes under center, and they have appeared in seven consecutive AFC Championship games. This is in addition to the two Super Bowl titles Kansas City has won.
Conventional wisdom, coupled with Carthon's recent track record as the one calling the shots for an organization, would suggest that Mahomes and the Chiefs are just fine.
