Former Kansas City Chiefs receiver Montrell Washington has hit an unexpected speed bump getting released by the New York Giants as final roster cuts begin. Getting cut this quickly doesn't bode well for the pass catcher's chances of landing a practice squad role with the franchise.

The cut comes after what was an incredibly hot start to camp. One that the former Chief was unable to maintain, leading to the early cut and leaving his future very much in question. For Kansas City, there obviously isn't a reunion possibility at this point.

The Chiefs have a receiver debate of their own to solve with a handful of interesting practice squad options. It seems that the final roster spot has come down to Nikko Remigio or Tyquan Thornton. Thornton should be heavily favored based on the comments of the coaching staff and the obvious chemistry shown with Patrick Mahomes.

While Remigio offers value on special teams, there is a real chance Thornton could become a surprise contributor. With an expected suspension ahead for Rashee Rice and plenty of opportunities for depth players in Reid's offense, Thornton is the obvious inclusion, with Remigio being offered a likely practice squad role.

Former Chiefs Receiver Makes Headlines with Unexpected Early Cut

Dan Duggan reported the roster cut, pointing out that Washington had started out camp incredibly hot for the Giants. However, the roster cut still doesn't come as a surprise with the more proven options ahead of the former Chief. What does come as a bit of a surprise is the timing of the decision. It seems Washington's hot start would've made the decision a bit more difficult, or at least given the pass catcher a chance to be a late cut and practice squad signing.

Regardless, this doesn't bode well for a receiver that spent most of the 2023 and 2024 seasons as a member of the Kansas City practice squad. While there was a brief elevation to the active roster, most of his career has been as a member of a practice squad. Being unable to stick around New York's roster deeper into cuts doesn't bode well for the future.

It seems likely that Washington is going to be forced to search for a surprise landing spot on another practice squad. There simply isn't enough of a resume to believe the receiver has a chance to have any other path. Making it clear, the Chiefs made the right decision, turning the page and moving on with superior options.
