Former Chiefs Star Joins Hated Division Rival in Big Offseason Prediction
The Kansas City Chiefs cornerback room has struggled for most of this season. Meanwhile, former Chiefs cornerback Charvarius Ward continues to succeed after leaving Kansas City in 2021.
After departing from Kansas City, Ward signed a three-year $40.5 million contract with the San Francisco 49ers. While in San Francisco, he has done a nice job of shutting down opposing wide receivers. However, Ward's contract with the 49ers is up after this season, meaning he could enter free agency.
In Bleacher Report's latest article projecting offseason moves, they have Ward signing with the Los Angeles Chargers, a bitter AFC West division rival. Bleacher Report had this to say about the possible signing:
"The cornerback position is going to be one of the most interesting for the Chargers this offseason. Asante Samuel Jr. is a free agent. He wasn't drafted by the current regime, and he suffered a season-ending injury after four games this season.. Charvarius Ward is having a bit of a down year for the Niners this season, but he's a proven veteran who has playoff-winning experience."

Former Chiefs CB Charvarius Ward Signs With Chargers in Stunning Prediction
While in Kansas City, Ward was considered a lockdown cornerback. In four seasons with the team, Ward allowed completion percentages of 78.9% in 2018, 47.2% in 2019, 57.1% in 2020, and 51.3% in 2021. His rookie season wasn't great, but Ward definitely improved over the next three seasons.
He also gathered 22 tackles, 29 pass deflections, one forced fumble, and four interceptions with the Chiefs.
During Ward's time in San Francisco, his completion percentage allowed has consistently been between 54.1% and 60.5%. Yet, in 2023 Ward was an All-Pro and Pro Bowler, finishing the season with 72 tackles, 23 pass deflections, one forced fumble, five interceptions (one returned for a touchdown), and a completion percentage against of 54.1%.
In both Chiefs/Chargers games this season, the Chiefs offense struggled to score. The Chargers adding Ward would certainly increase that difficulty.
While that might be a good thing for the Chargers, Chiefs fans would like to stop playing in close games against every team, especially division rivals.
