Final rosters are now locked into place with Tuesday's deadline offering not only surprises for the Kansas City Chiefs, but throughout the league. Kansas City's biggest shock was opting to carry eight receivers to start the year.

One former Chiefs skill player wasn't as lucky, however, with Clyde Edwards-Helaire being cut by his childhood team.

The former Kansas City back spent the 2020-2024 seasons with the organization before leaving in free agency. Edwards-Helaire wasn't consistently reliable and forced the franchise to turn the page. While there were a handful of great moments in the veteran's tenure, there simply wasn't the needed production. This led to free agency, where Edwards-Helaire would sign with his childhood-favorite Saints.

Edwards-Helaire is from Baton Rouge, Louisiana, and played his college ball for LSU. Signing with the Saints wasn't just about finding the next NFL landing spot, but coming home. It had a chance to be a rare great story in what is an ugly Saints' roster. The rebuilding franchise lacks talent and depth at nearly every position.

Former Chiefs Running Back Clyde Edwards-Helaire Hits Unexpected Roadblock

For Kansas City, a reunion isn't a consideration based on the current depth at the position. Unless Edwards-Helaire is a practice squad option, there simply isn't a fit in the current Chiefs backfield. Still, the veteran shouldn't have difficulty finding a new landing spot.

One option that stands out is the Cleveland Browns whose first edition of the final roster only included two backs. Jerome Ford and Dylan Sampson are the lone options on the active roster. It seems likely the Browns will be exploring roster cuts and trade options for a third option or an upgraded backup behind the rookie. This leaves Cleveland as a clear option for Edwards-Helaire as the Super Bowl champion attempts to continue his career.

The New Orleans cut does further prove the Chiefs made the right decision turning the page when they did. Kansas City has great options in Pacheco and Kareem Hunt, who are both superior rushers to the current free agent. As difficult as it was to make the move, there is no question remaining that it was the right decision.
