Former Kansas City Chiefs running back Jerick McKinnon spent the entire 2024 season out of the league. After being injured for much of the 2023 season, McKinnon returned just in time for Kansas City's Super Bowl matchup against the 49ers. The back would make two notable plays and help the Chiefs become the back-to-back defending champs. Even as a lesser contributor, this type of accomplishment rarely goes unsigned. It was a surprise to see McKinnon sit out an entire season even after an injury-plagued 2023.

Now, the Chiefs have clearly moved on, welcoming back Kareem Hunt as the second option behind Isiah Pacheco. This closes the door on McKinnon making another return to the Chiefs, barring an unexpected injury. With this in mind, it is safe to say the veteran is nearing his final chance to continue what has been a solid career.

Jerrick McKinnon Quickly Running Out of Time To Revive Career

McKinnon's career started with four years in Minnesota before spending the next six with San Francisco and Kansas City. The last three years, McKinnon would become a two-time Super Bowl champ and an underrated contributor within the Chiefs' offense.

With this in mind, it isn't off the table that the veteran back finds a landing spot ahead of camp to continue his career. However, after sitting for a year, it is increasingly unlikely that his career is going to continue. Missing another camp should all but close the book on McKinnon's NFL career. Barring an injury or desperation move, there are simply too many existing options still on the market.

Gus Edwards, Nick Chubb, Jamaal Williams, Jeff Wilson, and JK Dobbins are all far more established players who are still searching for landing spots. If players with this level of resumes cannot find a contract, what is out there for Jerrick McKinnon?

If this is the end for the former Chief, he will forever have the fans' respect for his underrated contributions to the greatest teams in franchise history. Back-to-back Super Bowl champion is an accolade few NFL players can ever put at the top of their resume. Jerrick McKinnon has this honor and remains a respected former Chief.
