Why former Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Carson Wentz remains a free agent is a bit of a mystery. Far lesser talents have found landing spots as backups or even as third options or veteran leadership. Wentz isn't a starting quarterback, but he has starting experience that easily makes him among the best backup options for teams with young starters.

However, Wentz remains sitting in free agency after a lone season with the Chiefs. It is odd that a team hasn't been willing to take a risk on the veteran as a bridge option or at least as a fallback behind a rookie.

It is clear that the Chiefs have no interest in a reunion with Wentz after adding former division rival Gardner Minshew in the 2025 offseason. The veteran quarterback is coming off a failed stint with the Raiders and is a great addition for Kansas City. Stealing from a rival likely gives some insight into their offense and adds an experienced veteran in case Mahomes was forced to miss any time. While it is unfortunate for Wentz, it is the right move for Kansas City.

Looking at potential landing spots left for the veteran quarterback, the Minnesota Vikings stand out as a great option. While the team has already added Sam Howell, the recent injury history for Minnesota demands carrying three quarterbacks on the active roster. There is also the wildcard factor of J.J. McCarthy being a complete unknown as the starter.

If there is any possible situation that is going to get the best out of Wentz, it is in Minnesota. Consider what magic the Vikings worked with Sam Darnold after helping current Atlanta backup Kirk Cousins have the best season of his career. If you're a quarterback looking to breathe life back into your career, there is no better spot.

Regardless of where, it would be a surprise not to see the quarterback find some type of security before the start of the 2025 season. Wentz simply has too much talent and experience not to find a job, even if the chapter has clearly closed in Kansas City.
