Former Chiefs QB Ian Book was released by the Eagles just a few days ago but was re-signed by Philadelphia on Thursday to the practice squad, giving him a spot with a team competing for a Super Bowl.

He spent the summer with Kansas City but was waived after training camp, though he didn't have a team until the Eagles added him right after Christmas. Originally a fourth-round pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, Book had an impressive career at Notre Dame yet has failed to translate that success to the professional level.

Considering Jalen Hurts' recent concussion and the underwhelming backup situation behind him with Kenny Pickett and Tanner McKee, it makes sense for Philadelphia to stockpile options.

Former Chiefs QB Re-Signs With Eagles Before Playoffs

Book has only appeared in one NFL game, completing 12 of his 20 attempts for 135 yards and no TDs with two interceptions, adding three carries for six yards on the ground. He was a three-year starter with the Fighting Irish, throwing for 8,948 yards and 72 TDs during his stellar career.

Since the Eagles brought him back so quickly, it appears this was the plan all along since no other team was likely to claim him on waivers this late in the campaign. Philadelphia seems to believe it can develop him, and the Chiefs liked what they saw throughout summer workouts and camp.

Kansas City's quarterback room was simply too crowded after signing Carson Wentz, who is a significantly more capable backup than Book is. Chris Oladokun has been with the organization for multiple years and is a serviceable option as well, leaving no room for Book.

Hopefully, Book can turn into a standout backup. He's only 26 years old and at a strong franchise with trusted coaches and personnel, making it a strong landing spot. Things didn't work out with the Chiefs, though perhaps one day he can make a return to the two-time defending Super Bowl champs after a bit more seasoning.
