Former Chiefs QB Re-Signs With Team That Just Released Him
By Jovan Alford
On Monday, former Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Bailey Zappe was suddenly released by the Cleveland Browns before their primetime contest against the Denver Broncos. The move to cut the veteran was a surprise given that the Browns only had two other quarterbacks on the active roster – Jameis Winston and Dorian Thompson-Robinson.
However, the Browns made a few gameday moves before kickoff, which included elevating Chiefs wide receiver Kadarius Toney from the practice squad.
Nevertheless, the former Chiefs quarterback will reportedly return to the Browns after the minor procedural move. According to Aaron Wilson, the Browns will re-sign Zappe to the 53-man roster.
Zappe was signed off the Chiefs’ practice squad on Oct. 22 as the Browns needed another QB with Deshaun Watson suffering a season-ending injury. The veteran QB spent two months on Kansas City’s practice squad after the New England Patriots waived him ahead of the 53-man roster deadline in late August.
Zappe didn’t see any action with the Chiefs over that short duration and has yet to play with the Browns. The veteran quarterback actually started in six games last season for the Pats as they were over the Mac Jones era.
In those games, Zappe completed 62.4 percent of his passes for 1,114 yards, six touchdowns, and seven interceptions. We'll see if Zappe makes any appearances in the Browns' final five games of the 2024 season. The Chiefs will see Zappe and the Browns in Week 15 when Kansas City makes the trip to Cleveland.
