The Kansas City Chiefs have a rich history of great roster additions over the last decade that have helped set up the team's dynastic run. However, as is always the case, there have been a handful of failures along the way, including former Kansas City pass rusher Joshua Uche. The linebacker was traded to the Chiefs in 2024 for a 6th-rounder with the hope that he could bolster a questionable pass rush. Uche failed to garner a single sack before departing in free agency to join the rival Philadelphia Eagles.
Uche's time with the Eagles ended in similar frustration, sending the veteran to free agency, where there has been an unquestionable upgrade. The defender signed with the Miami Dolphins on a one-year, $1.4 million deal that puts the pass rusher in the exact situation needed to return to productivity. It was obvious during Uche's time with KC that the lights were too bright, and expectations were never going to be met.
Kansas City and Philadelphia both had far more experienced options to lean on, with both teams chasing postseason greatness. The former Chief now joins a Miami roster with incredibly low expectations and zero proven depth at the pass rusher position. If the season were to start today, Uche would be a projected starter with Chop Robinson on the opposite side.
Former Chiefs Pass Rusher Josh Uche Picked Perfect Free Agency Landing Spot
Uche has previously proven he can thrive when expectations are low, and the franchise he joined isn't expected to be a contender. Turn the clock back to the 2022 season when the pass rusher was a New England Patriot and produced 11.5 sacks. New England was still figuring out life after Tom Brady and didn't give Uche attention or expectations.
It was the perfect environment, one that nearly mirrors Miami's expectations. The defender has spent the last two seasons proving that when there is competition and title expectations, he cannot be relied on. Landing with the Dolphins was the perfect chance to put his career back on track.
For the Chiefs, there is zero regret in parting ways with the linebacker as the recent performance proves Uche isn't the contributor KC needs off the edge. Plain and simple, there is no reason to have faith that the edge rusher is capable of producing anywhere with legitimate Super Bowl hopes.
The Dolphins offer little competition heading towards the draft, with Robinson, Uche, and David Ojabo expected to be the team's primary pass-rushing trio. It serves as a chance for Uche to put together a run that gives the veteran another opportunity to either be traded to a contending roster or cash in during 2027 free agency. No question, Uche chose wisely, putting himself in the perfect position while simultaneously proving the Chiefs were right to turn the page.
