OTAs officially get started on Tuesday for the Kansas City Chiefs and the next few weeks are an exciting opportunity to see the roster start to take shape for the upcoming 2025 season. There are a lot of intriguing players to keep an eye on as the team tries to rebound from the crushing Super Bowl loss to the Philadelphia Eagles.
Most fans are understandably focused on the Chiefs and their rookies, but it's wise to keep an eye on what's going on with other teams in the AFC West as well. The Los Angeles Chargers are hoping to take a leap in their second year under Jim Harbaugh, though they have one big hole remaining on the roster that hasn't truly been addressed.
Los Angeles' starting tight end is currently Will Dissly with Tyler Conklin backing him up. One former Chiefs tight end, Peyton Hendershot, just may wind up being an option for the Chargers as a depth piece.
Former Chiefs TE Peyton Hendershot Could Sign With Chargers During OTAs
Hendershot appeared in seven games with Kansas City last year, catching five passes for 51 yards with one start. The former undrafted free agent out of Indiana is only 26 years old and has intriguing pass-catching upside, though that he could even be an option for Los Angeles reflects on that organization's desperation.
The Chiefs elected not to tender Hendershot back in March, so he's an unrestricted free agent. There was some speculation that he could return to Kansas City should Robert Tonyan struggle this summer or Jared Wiley suffers a setback in his ACL recovery, but in all likelihood, Hendershot would only be a practice squad option for this roster.
Either way, if the Chargers aren't impressed by Dissly or Conklin, and there's little reason to believe they should be, then the front office will be implored to bring outside options in. That makes Hendershot a logical target, particularly given his familiarity with Kansas City's offense.
Even if Hendershot remains a free agent or returns to the Chiefs' practice squad, fans should feel good about the gaping hole at tight end that Harbaugh will have to deal with.
