The Kansas City Chiefs are one of three teams that have already kicked off training camp. With the rest of the league set to begin in the next couple of days, it means lots of news about new signings and retirements. Though most retirements happen when the season ends, some players contemplate the decision and end up waiting until around training camp to call it a career.

That said, one former Chief has announced his retirement decision right before the start of camp. On Tuesday, former Chiefs safety Tyrann Mathieu, nicknamed the Honey Badger, retired in a post on Instagram.

Former Chiefs Safety Tyrann Mathieu Retires From the NFL

Mathieu's post read," As I hang up my cleats, I’m filled with gratitude as I close this chapter of my life and officially retire from the game that’s shaped me in every way. From my first snap in college to my final play in the NFL, this journey has been nothing short of a blessing. Football gave me purpose, discipline, and memories that will stay with me forever."

He added, "But more than anything, it gave me a community. To every coach who believed in me, every teammate who battled beside me, and every fan who showed up, cheered, and rode with me through the highs and lows, thank you.... This isn’t goodbye — it’s just the next chapter.Much love, always."

Chiefs Kingdom remembers Mathieu for the three seasons he spent in Kansas City being a ballhawking safety. During his time with the Chiefs, the Honey Badger recorded 213 tackles, three sacks, 27 pass deflections, and 13 interceptions. Mathieu's nose for the football always gave Chiefs fans something to watch out for.

Moreover, during his time in Kansas City, Mathieu was a well-respected leader in the locker room and a member of the community. Furthermore, during his stint in Kansas City, the 33-year-old helped the team reach two Super Bowls. In those appearances, Mathieu and the Chiefs went 1-1. Although he didn't make big plays in either game, having him out there was key for the defense.

Thanks to his Super Bowl victory with the Chiefs, Mathieu will likely be a Hall of Famer. In 12 seasons, he recorded 36 interceptions and was named an All-Pro four times. Chiefs Kingdom wishes all the best to Mathieu in his retirement.
