A former Kansas City Chiefs defensive back hit another roadblock with the Detroit Lions releasing Jammie Robinson. In many ways, the move doesn't come as a surprise for the former Chief, who was simply brought in as injury-replacement depth. But it's still a big blow for the 24-year-old's young NFL career.

When the Lions stole him from the Chiefs' practice squad earlier this season, it seemed like a big opportunity for Robinson, who didn't appear for a single game in KC after being added to the practice squad when the Arizona Cardinals cut him in August. But now that this opportunity fizzled out, a reunion with the Chiefs could be on the horizon.

Jammie Robinson Reunion Could Reinforce Chiefs Practice Squad

For the Chiefs, it is at least worth considering the reunion as they attempt to right the ship heading into Week 11. Robinson isn't likely to earn any actual playing time this season, but the veteran offers some interesting practice squad help and already has some familiarity with the Chiefs. Of course, that move would be more impactful for Robinson than for the Chiefs.

It's not as though his career is over if the Chiefs don't bring him back, but he's certainly running out of road quickly.

Even though it was expected, being cut by the Lions is a tough setback, and a bleak one for his NFL future. Detroit activated Daniel Thomas in a move that set up Robinson's release, as well as adding offensive lineman Michael Niese to the team's active roster. This paints the full picture that Robinson was only ever viewed as an emergency depth option, never a true part of Detroit's plans.

As difficult as this might be for the defender to swallow, it is the reality of the business and speaks to his struggles the few times he has managed to take the field, registering only 20 tackles throughout his three-year career.

For the Chiefs, the safety position isn't a huge area of concern, even as much as the franchise might miss Justin Reid. Between the trio of Bryan Cook, Jaden Hicks and Chris Roland-Wallace on the active roster and veteran Mike Edwards on the practice squad, Robinson could easily be redundant on the depth chart.

A reunion would be focused on Robinson's long-term potential, not his ability to make an immediate impact. But the need to shape their roster around immediate impact is growing by the week as the Chiefs' season continues to wobble out of control.
