Former Chiefs Coach's Bid to Get New Job Just Hit a Roadblock
The Kansas City Chiefs are gearing up to take on the Buffalo Bills in their seventh straight AFC Championship on Sunday. Nevertheless, not all teams have had the success of the Chiefs in recent seasons and are in the market for a new head coach.
The New Orleans Saints are among the teams looking for a new head coach, with former Chiefs quarterbacks coach and passing game coordinator Mike Kafka on their radar. Kafka was scheduled to meet with the Saints on Tuesday for his second-round in-person interview. Unfortunately, due to inclement weather in New Orleans, the Saints are rescheduling their in-person interviews for later this week, according to Tom Pelissero of NFL Network.
Chiefs News: Former Chiefs Coach Mike Kafka's Second Head Coaching Interview With Saints Gets Delayed
Kafka started in Kansas City during the 2017 season as an offensive quality control coach. The following season, Kafka became the quarterback coach, which coincided with Patrick Mahomes taking over at quarterback. Mahomes earned MVP honors in 2018 under Kafka's tutelage.
That said, given the success Mahomes has had without Kafka, it's hard to say how much impact he really had on Mahomes development. Nevertheless, Kafka remained solely the quarterback coach for one more season before adding pass game coordinator duties during the 2020 season.
Kafka stayed as quarterbacks coach and passing game coordinator till the end of the 2021 season. Following that season, Kafka took the job as New York Giants offensive coordinator. Under Kafka, the Giants' offense struggled.
However, the team lacked talent, and he may not have owned play-calling duties as head coach Brian Daboll is also an offensive mind. The chances of Kafka landing with a team during this cycle are slim. Anything can happen. The people of Kansas City will certainly be hoping he can succeed wherever he lands in the future.
