Former Kansas City Chiefs safety Mike Edwards seems poised to take over starting safety duties for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers for the rest of the 2024 season.

According to Ian Rapoport, Buccaneers starter Jordan Whitehead is feared to have torn his pec in their 30-7 victory over the New York Giants on Sunday, which would end his 2024 campaign.

Edwards began his career as a third-round pick of the Buccaneers in 2019. During Edwards' first stint with the Bucs from 2019-2022, he recorded 184 tackles, one sack, seven interceptions (three of which were returned for touchdowns), one forced fumble, and three fumble recoveries. Edwards also won the Super Bowl with Tampa Bay in 2021.

Although Tampa didn't re-sign Edwards after the 2022 season, his production was enough to land him a one-year contact with the Chiefs. In Kansas City, Edwards recorded 54 tackles, one sack, two fumble recoveries (one was returned for a touchdown) and one interception. He also added a second Super Bowl ring to his collection when the Chiefs defeated the San Francisco 49ers 25-22 in Super Bowl 58.

Edwards then signed with the Buffalo Bills in the 2024 offseason, but only played three games with them before being cut. After being cut by the Bills, Tennessee signed Edwards on November 6 and then released him a week later.

That is why Edwards is back in Tampa Bay where his career started. Hopefully, he can make the most out of this opportunity and boost his stock again.
