Former Chiefs kicker Matthew Wright, who started two games for Kansas City in 2022 while Harrison Butker battled an injury, officially signed with the San Francisco 49ers on Tuesday after Jake Moody suffered a high-ankle sprain.

Wright has bounced around the NFL over the last several years with his largest impact coming as a Jacksonville Jaguar in 2021, making 21 of 24 field goals over 14 games. He was solid in his two outings as Chief, making three of four kicks, including a 59-yarder.

Considering Kansas City has a Super Bowl rematch with San Francisco in Week 7, it appears the Chiefs will soon face him in a pivotal matchup.

49ers Sign Former Chiefs K Matthew Wright

San Francisco currently sits at 2-3, a surprising start though understandable given the slew of injuries the 49ers have suffered on the season. Moody's is just the latest example, and his absence was certainly felt as the defending NFC champions blew a double-digit lead to lose to a division rival in the Cardinals.

Wright may not transform the 49ers' chances, though his ability to hit kicks from range at least gives the special teams unit life.

For his career, he's made 40-of-47 field goals and 35-of-37 extra points. Wright isn't a bonafide difference-maker, yet he's an improvement over an injured Moody.

The Chiefs still have the NFL's best kicker, who has routinely shown up in the biggest moments for Kansas City. Moody's blocked extra point in the Super Bowl helped allow the Chiefs' comeback, and now we'll see if Wright can make an impact on a contender that's suddenly battling for a playoff berth.
