Failed Chiefs Vet Quickly Signed by AFC Loser After Sudden Release
By Joe Summers
The Chiefs just released DE Cameron Thomas on Tuesday, yet he quickly found a new home with one of the laughingstocks of the AFC, the Cleveland Browns.
By all means, Thomas was a failed acquisition by Kansas City. He was acquired for a future seventh-round pick, which means almost nothing, especially considering the Chiefs anticipate selecting at the end of the draft in that round.
He's still a recent 2022 third-round pick who has plenty of promise, so it makes sense for the Browns to take a swing amid a lost season. Nonetheless, it represents a rare swing-and-miss by Veach.
Former Chiefs DE Cameron Thomas Signed by Browns
Thomas earned six total snaps in his time with the Chiefs. He was not a player who factored into the long-term plans. Nonetheless, Thomas is an athletic specimen who suited up for 32 games in his first two years with the Cardinals.
That Thomas couldn't earn snaps given Kansas City's struggles along the defensive line speaks volumes. He couldn't hang on a defense that needed help at his position, so the upside appears to be low.
We've seen enough of Brett Veach and Andy Reid's actions over the years to know they'll find value if it exists. They're the masters of identifying diamonds in the rough. Unfortunately, Thomas didn't prove to be one.
There's no reason for Chiefs fans to root against him or hope for his downfall though. Perhaps he can turn into a productive player down the line. He'll certainly have the chance on a rebuilding team like the Browns.
For now though, it seems yet another team has viewed Kansas City's trash as an uninspiring treasure.
