With the third week of preseason games getting underway, starting on Thursday night, it will be the final opportunity for veterans on the roster bubble and rookies to make their cases for why they should be on the 53-man roster or, at the very least, the practice squad.
The Kansas City Chiefs will have tough cuts to make after their final preseason game on Friday night, as they have a few key position battles worth paying attention to.
Earlier this week, Kansas City got a head start on a couple of its roster cuts, as it sent rookie running back Elijah Young packing. The decision to part ways with the undrafted free agent wasn’t shocking, given the talent in the running back room and potential roster crunch at other spots.
Meanwhile, for Young, it wasn’t the most ideal time to get cut, as most teams aren’t looking to add guys this late into the preseason. That said, the rookie running back was gifted a second chance to prove himself, this time with one of the Chiefs’ rivals.

Former Chiefs RB Elijah Young Signs with Bills Days After Being Cut
On Wednesday, the Bills announced that they signed Young and two other players, who will look to make an impression on Buffalo’s coaching staff. The former Chief running back is taking the place of UFL running back Jarveon Howard, who just signed earlier this week.
The Bills don’t play until Saturday night against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, so there will be some time for Young to get up to speed and hopefully see the field.
The young running back didn’t see much time in the Chiefs’ last preseason game against the Seattle Seahawks, seeing seven snaps (two on offense). With not many snaps, Young posted only 10 yards on two carries.
In the preseason opener a couple of weeks ago against the Arizona Cardinals, Young saw 17 snaps (13 on offense), but didn’t get a single carry and only had one target in the passing game.
Nonetheless, with the 5-foot-10, 198-pound running back getting signed days after being cut, he has a chance to make the Bills’ practice squad or get on the radar of another team looking for a running back.
Looking at Buffalo’s depth chart, Young won’t unseat guys like James Cook, Ray Davis, or even Ty Johnson. It will be tough to outplay Frank Gore Jr., who likely could be a P-squad guy too.
At the same time, Young can only control what’s in front of him. We’ll see if the ex-Chief makes an impact in the final week of preseason.
