The biggest news around the NFL came with a shock on Tuesday morning as the New York Jets fired Robert Saleh after a 2-3 start to the season. Based on the reaction from former players, it sounds like the move was a long time coming.

Ex-Chiefs RB La'Mical Perine played one season for Saleh back in 2021. In a since-deleted social media post on X (formerly known as Twitter), Perine ripped his old coach.

He's with the Steelers now after spending time with the Chiefs, but clearly Saleh's behavior with the Jets still bothers Perine.

The tweet was only up for a few minutes before Perine deleted it. Current Eagle Mekhi Becton echoed similar sentiments. Saleh was known as a defensive coach, yet his 20-36 record as a head coach indicates his message never got through to his respective locker rooms.

Perine ultimately spent only two seasons in New York, averaging 3.7 yards per carry with two TDs. He was on Kansas City's practice squad for a while before being called up for three games in 2023 but couldn't crack the rotation.

Once undrafted rookie Carson Steele emerged, Perine became expendable. He's now with Pittsburgh's practice squad, still hoping for the big opportunity that's eluded him.

Perine wasn't "surprised one bit" at the decision to fire Saleh, nor were most of the Jets' fans. Reasonable minds could point to Aaron Rodgers' and offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett's underwhelming offense as a larger issue, but Saleh is an understandable scapegoat.

There's no love lost between he and his former players, something Saleh will have to correct if he gets another head coaching job during his career.
