The Kansas City Chiefs are preparing to take part in their third consecutive Super Bowl this Sunday. While every Chiefs fan is focused on the team going down in the history books on Sunday, one beloved former coach has landed a new job.

On Sunday, former offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy was hired as the Chicago Bears running backs coach, as first reported by Johnathan Jones of CBS Sports. Bieniemy being named the Bears' next running backs coach provides him an opportunity to regain his stock within NFL coaching circles.

Eric Bieniemy Landed in a Great Spot to Re-Establish Himself in the NFL

A few seasons ago, Bieniemy was one of the hottest names to land a head coaching job due to the success of the Chiefs offense, despite being a hot name. Bieniemy didn't land a head coaching job in the 2023 cycle. Instead, he was named the assistant head coach and offensive coordinator of the Washington Commanders.

Unfortunately, Bienimey's tenure in Washington was short-lived due to ownership changes after the 2023 season. Due to the inconsistency of Washington's offense in 2023, Bieneimey was unable to land another NFL job during the 2024 offseason.

As a result, he spent 2024 in the college ranks as the assistant head coach and offensive coordinator at UCLA. In 2024, the Bruins rushed for 1,039 yards on 338 carries. While that is terrible efficiency, at least Bienmey evolved his philosophy to run more.

As the Bears running back coach, Bieniemy gets to work with D'Andre Swift and Roschon Johnson, who are potential new additions to the running back room. Although both Swift and Jonhosn underperformed last season, both players are talented.

In particular, this applies to Swift, who ran for 1,000+ yards in 2023. During Bieneimy's time with the Chiefs, he was able to get the best out of running back Clyde Edwards-Helaire, In three seasons, with Bieniemy, Edwards-Helaire rushed for 1,622 yards on 371 carries and caught 72 passes on 100 targets for 577 yards. Edwards-Helaire also scored 17 total touchdowns.

Although Swift and Edwards-Helaire are very different players, if he is able to get a higher level of production out of Swift like he did Edwards-Helaire, it will reflect nicely on him.

At the end of the day, Kansas City will always have the once-beloved offensive coordinator's back. Hopefully, Bieniemy can become an NFL head coach one day or at least return to being an offensive coordinator.
