The idea of the Kansas City Chiefs even entertaining the idea of cutting legendary tight end Travis Kelce is laughable. And yet there has been an influx of Google searches asking, "Is Travis Kelce cut from the Chiefs?" It seems likely that this is due to a combination of the declining production and heated exchange with head coach Andy Reid.
Still, it remains shocking that this is genuinely a trending topic that has garnered consistent attention. It speaks to a reactionary sports culture that appears to believe there would be some type of fallout from the exchange.
Andy Reid's words to Kelce were in the heat of battle and in no way indicated an expected roster cut or a real threat to move on from the tight end. It is also important to note that we have yet to hear exactly what Reid said to Kelce. The speculation of Reid threatening a roster cut is pure conjecture. Even if it is accurate again, it is important to point out that it was in the heat of the moment, with absolutely zero chance that the head coach meant it.
Chiefs Head Coach Andy Reid Speculated to Threaten Travis Kelce's Roster Spot
Even if there is a hint of truth in what the speculated exchange was, Kelce is going to walk away from Kansas City on his own terms. It unquestionably isn't going to be due to an exchange with his head coach that clearly started a trend of the Chiefs taking over the game. Whether or not it had anything to do with the spark that Kelce provided, it is noteworthy that this is the moment things started to turn.
For Kelce, this isn't anything new, with the star having his every move dissected and covered on and off the field for the past two years. While the pass-catcher has always been among the league's stars at his position, his off-the-field life is fueling much of these speculative, reactionary stories that are now trending.
The KC legend is in zero danger of losing his roster spot and will retire with the Chiefs on his own terms. Barring anything crazy happening, this simply isn't changing based on one interaction or a few heated words from Reid. Kelce means too much to this organization even at this late stage of his career.
His presence is valued simply based on the leadership and experience provided. There is always the hope as well that the production returns to form when the games matter most. Regardless, the entire idea of the tight-end being even an entertained "cut" remains completely laughable.
