Lost in the treasure trove of headlines from OTAs last week was the fact that the Kansas City Chiefs clearly doubled down on their belief in rookie pass-rusher R Mason Thomas. The defender was drafted with KC's second-round pick at 40th overall. Still, the expectations for what Thomas can provide in year one are incredibly high, with new running backs coach DeMarco Murray speaking on the fit due to the two having ties in college.

""I had a very good idea of who he was as a person, as a player. Practiced against him daily. He was a team captain... a great character guy. There wasn't a lot of selling on my end... He's a tremendous talent.""
DeMarco Murray

This comment came via A to Z Sports Charles Goldman, with Murray having clear first-hand knowledge of coaching the Sooners during the defender's final college season. It speaks to the expectations that Kansas City has not only of Thomas on the field, but also of the clear culture fit that Thomas should be. It's a move the Chiefs are clearly making when it comes to the players they have brought in during the 2026 offseason.

Kansas City hasn't been afraid in years past to bring in project players who were facing off-the-field questions or concerns. This offseason has been a completely different tune, with high-character players being a clear area of focus.

Chiefs coaching staff has high expectations for rookie R Mason Thomas

It's a fun change of pace and perhaps speaks to the frustration of a front office that has dealt with a number of sensitive situations, including around current receiver Rashee Rice. The move seems to be an attempt to build the most possible team chemistry and keep the focus on the results on the field. Thomas fits this well, while providing an incredible potential ceiling as a speed-based rusher.

Having this elite combination makes it clear what a steal the Chiefs found on day two of the draft. Thomas has a chance to step into the starting lineup opposite George Karlaftis, with Ashton Gillotte being another key contributor at the position. This speaks to the opportunity the rookie will get from the jump and the expectations and belief of a coaching staff fully bought in.

For Thomas, it will be interesting to watch how he handles the challenges of taking the jump to an elite contender and facing instant expectations. If Murray's comments are any indication, the Chiefs are in for a fun rookie season and perhaps have found a pass-rushing answer.
