Dameon Pierce Picking Chiefs Over Several Teams Comes with a Catch

The Chiefs need to do everything in their power to convince Pierce that he didn't make a mistake.

The Kansas City Chiefs gave their backfield a boost by signing veteran running back Dameon Pierce on Sunday night. Although Kareem Hunt has been great, more RB help has been needed with Isiah Pacheco sidelined and Brashard Smith failing to meet expectations outside of the passing game.

The Chiefs only offered Pierce a practice squad role, though, which could lead to other RB-needy teams attempting to sign him. This is something that seems increasingly possible as KPRC 2 Houston's Aaron Wilson reports the Los Angeles Chargers, Chicago Bears, Denver Broncos, Philadelphia Eagles, Cincinnati Bengals, and Indianapolis Colts all had pending offers, while the Miami Dolphins allegedly had some interest, too.

With that in mind, it isn't a stretch to imagine that those teams might still think Pierce belongs in their backfield. Those potential suitors can't steal the veteran runner unless he's interested in ditching Kansas City, meaning the Chiefs must ensure that he immediately feels at home and useful.

Chiefs Must Keep Dameon Pierce Happy to Avoid an Early KC Exit

Obviously, the Chiefs had the best situation for Pierce to join, or else he would've considered another suitor. If Kansas City quickly proves it isn't the right spot for the ex-Houston Texan, he may be open to hearing about outside opportunities again. Happy RB, happy life (or however the saying goes).

The Eagles and Broncos, in particular, could be tempting to Pierce, as both teams are contending for the top spot in their respective conferences. Although the Chiefs are back over .500, the postseason is far from guaranteed still. In addition to the team success they'd offer, Philadelphia and Denver are dealing with depth issues at running back and could offer Pierce an active roster spot in a reserve role.

Fortunately, the Chiefs' less-than-ideal backfield situation could offer similar opportunities. Pacheco isn't cleared to return yet, while Elijah Mitchell and Clyde-Edwards Helaire aren't the most promising of backup options. Yes, Smith is there too, but it's clear that the former wideout is more suited to contribute as a pass-catcher rather than a runner.

With that in mind, Pierce could be the perfect RB2 to Hunt, transitioning into the RB3 role once Pacheco returns. He's a proven contributor with 1,942 scrimmage yards and nine touchdowns in 42 career games under his belt. That gives head coach Andy Reid plenty of veteran experience to rely on, and a three-headed unit in the running back room could be enticing to Pierce if he's willing to take on a small, yet consistent role.

If the Chiefs were happy with their RB situation, chances are Pierce wouldn't have been signed. Kansas City clearly believes that he can help the backfield reach new heights. Now, it's up to the coaches to prove to the Bainbridge, GA native that they have a plan to get him on the field and aren't just going to waste his time.

It will be interesting to see if the Chiefs eventually bump Smith or Mitchell off the 53-man roster to promote Pierce. A short turnaround could mean that the newest Chief suits up on Thanksgiving Day to face the Dallas Cowboys if Pacheco isn't back yet.

If he does suit up and makes the most of his opportunity, Kansas City must do everything it can to convince him that Chiefs Kingdom is exactly where he belongs.
