There has been an undeniable level of disrespect swirling around the Kansas City Chiefs and Patrick Mahomes after a rough 2025 season. It's as if one year of failure gave permission for league pundits and fans to get every wrong take off their chest when it comes to Mahomes and KC. Underrating Mahomes is a dangerous decision, one that fellow players clearly don't make the mistake of doing.
Fifth-round rookie and training camp darling, Cyrus Allen is the latest example of how Mahomes has continued to demand respect and inspire his teammates despite the quarterback's lessened numbers over the last three regular seasons.
In last year's injury-shortened season, Mahomes finished with 3,587 passing yards and 22 passing touchdowns. These are good numbers in a full season for nearly half the league; only by the lofty standards the three-time Super Bowl MVP has established would this be an invitation to cast doubt and rank less accomplished players ahead of him.
Gabriela Hernandez of KWCH10 News provided a glimpse of the respect Mahomes still garners. "I'm still lookin' at Pat like, 'Damn, this Patrick Mahomes I'm around...," Allen said postgame after a preseason loss. This points to the undeniable legend who has a young player starstruck. It serves as a reminder of who Mahomes is, no matter the recent numbers.

There is still no one in the league who can compare their resume to that of Mahomes and have a fair argument. There is already a valid argument to be made that the signal-caller is only behind Tom Brady when having the GOAT conversation.
It is important to remember that recent seasons have seen numbers decline based not on ability, but on the cast around the quarterback as well as playcalling. The lack of investment in the receiver room since Tyreek Hill left exposes just how much Kansas City has grown to rely on Mahomes. It seems the Chiefs have simply believed that anything close to a capable offensive line will be more than enough to provide the Chiefs a chance to make a Super Bowl run.
This cannot be denied when you consider the past two groups of receivers that Mahomes has taken to a Super Bowl. In fact, the majority of the Chiefs' wide receiver room during the 2023 season is now out of the league. Patrick Mahomes dragged those dudes to a Super Bowl victory.
