Cole Kmet might be the perfect mid-season trade target for Chiefs

Chiefs should pounce on Kmet who should be a likely trade deadline target.

The Kansas City Chiefs clearly have no plan at tight end after Travis Kelce, and it can be argued lack a reliable backup plan as well. The 36-year-old can only do this for so long, and the Chiefs must start prepping for life without the future Hall of Famer. With this in mind, it isn't unrealistic to look at the Chicago Bears and Cole Kmet as a potential answer. The tight end was recently pointed to as a clear trade chip for Chicago based on the presence of Colston Loveland and Sam Roush.

It is beyond clear that Kmet isn't a part of the future, with Loveland a better and younger talent and Roush a clear investment that suggests the Bears are getting ready to move on. Not only does Kmet give the Chiefs a clear post-Kelce option, but there is a need this season for production from the 27-year-old. Kmet's most productive season came back in 2023, when the tight end had 719 receiving yards and six touchdowns.

Noah Gray isn't capable of offering anything close to this, while Kmet is yet to be a featured weapon in an offense with a quarterback as talented as Patrick Mahomes. It is easy to imagine him capable of putting together multiple productive seasons, especially as he gets accustomed to Andy Reid tight end firendly offensive scheme.

It appears likely that Kmet is going to start the season with Chicago, as the team wants to see Loveland take another leap and Roush prove capable of stepping into a secondary role. If both of these things happen, it is very much on the table that Kansas City adds Kmet in the middle of the season.

For Kmet, he's stepping into a better situation with a chance to be a featured weapon and perhaps become the answer after Kelce opts to call it a career. While there is no replacing the legend, Kmet can at least meet the recent production Kelce has offered and be a security blanket for Mahomes moving forward.

Kansas City clearly is setting itself up to add options ahead of this year's trade deadline, based on the lack of proven pieces. It makes a great deal of sense for this to be Kmet, solving a problem for Chicago and adding needed depth for Kansas City. Depth capable of keeping KC's Super Bowl window open for years to come.
