Yesterday, the Kansas City Chiefs made the surprising decision to retain eight wide receivers on their 53-man roster. The decision to keep eight was likely made because they knew that their best wideout, Rashee Rice, would miss the first six games to serve his suspension.

Still, seven receivers seem a little much, especially since the Chiefs' secondary has three players on the injured reserve. As of now, the Chiefs will enter Week 1 with seven receivers and must make a tough decision, either soon or down the road, on who they'll cut once Rice is back.

Currently, all signs point to Jason Brownlee being the guy they cut.

Chiefs WR Jason Brownlee Is on Thin Ice

Jason Brownlee signed to the Chiefs' practice squad during their Super Bowl run in January and signed a reserve/future contract with the team in February. Brownlee played his first two seasons with the Jets, recording five receptions, 56 receiving yards, and one touchdown in seven games.

Entering training camp, Brownlee was considered a long shot to make the team due to the team’s crowded receiver room. However, Brownlee quickly made a name for himself, consistently having standout days in training camp with some amazing catches.

His impressive camp immediately translated into the preseason, as Brownlee hauled in a touchdown from Patrick Mahomes in the Chiefs’ first game. Brownlee would finish camp with two receptions, 17 receiving yards, and one touchdown.

Although he didn’t have big numbers in preseason play, his performance in training camp influenced the Chiefs to keep him on the roster. Despite making the team, Brownlee still must prove he’s worth keeping.

The team must release one receiver once Rice comes back, and will likely release another, since teams typically don’t keep seven receivers on the roster. Right now, that receiver is Brownlee.

If Brownlee were to remain on the roster, he must make an impact in the regular season.
