How the Kansas City Chiefs are going to decide to fill out the final spot of the depth chart at the wide receiver position remains very much in question. Throughout the last two weeks, it seems each day brings a new report of a fringe roster pass catcher impressing. Jason Brownlee is the latest example of this, making an early preseason push for the final roster spot.

Brownlee made a statement with an impressive touchdown catch from Patrick Mahomes in the first game of the Kansas City preseason. The pass catcher kept the defender's attention, buying space to dive to make a back shoulder catch, securing a truly impressive touchdown. Understandably, this has created a level of buzz as to whether or not the receiver could make his way into the Chiefs' rotation.

It is the first real chance Brownlee has been handed since being demoted to the Jets' practice squad two seasons ago. The receiver was first added to the roster after signing as an undrafted free agent ahead of the 2023 season. However, his story was lost due to the Aaron Rodgers injury and New York's inability to find answers at the position. Now, Brownlee has a real chance to join a contending roster if the recent surge continues.

Chiefs Depth Receiver Jason Brownlee Making Clear Roster Push

The problem with Brownlee making the roster is simply the number of players with more experience or similar stories. Tyquan Thornton, Nikko Remigio, and Skyy Moore have been the assumed pieces contending for the final spot at the position. For Brownlee to make the roster, there is going to need to be a major shake-up.

A piece of this could be the expected suspension of Rashee Rice, who would create an additional roster spot for the first handful of games. Clarity is still needed in how long the expected suspension will be and how Kansas City will fill the role. Regardless, the point remains it is going to be an uphill battle for Brownlee to continue to fight for a spot.

What the Chiefs lack in established star receivers, the franchise makes up for with a number of exciting options. There are legitimately 8-9 receivers with an argument to make the final roster. This helps point out just how exciting the race will be in the final two preseason games. Giving Kansas City fans something to pay attention to, they excitedly await the 2025 season.
