Chiefs Veteran Still on the Chopping Block After Surviving Trade Deadline
The NFL trade deadline has officially passed, meaning the only way a team can move on from a player now is by cutting them. With Isiah Pacheco aiming to return by late November, the Kansas City Chiefs will be forced to make a roster cut.
The running back position is where the Chiefs are most likely to make a cut to accommodate Pacheco. Currently, they have four active running backs, and Pacheco’s return would bring that total to five.
Since Pacheco's injury, the Chiefs relied on free-agent pickup Kareem Hunt to handle the bulk of the carries. Veteran Samaje Perine and rookie Carson Steele are also worked into the game plan. Leaving fifth-year pro Clyde Edwards-Helaire as the odd man out.
Edwards-Helaire has yet to see any playing this season and that won't change when Pacheco returns. Currently, Edwards-Helaire is on a one-year deal worth $1.125 million with the Chiefs, according to Over the Cap. Cutting Edwards-Helaire would net the Chiefs $342,647.
What the Chiefs should have done was trade Edwards-Helaire before the deadline to a team like the Dallas Cowboys. Doing that would have netted the ChIefs more money back and provided
Edwards-Helaire a chance to play.
Unfortunately, the former first round pick is now likely to be cut from the team that he has won two Super Bowls with. Although Edwards-Helaire's time in Kansas City seems to be almost up, fans would still like to see him succeed wherever he lands.
